With menopause frequently making headlines—rightfully so, as women deserve the spotlight on this significant life transition—there’s one topic that gets surprisingly little attention: andropause.
Yes, men go through their own hormonal changes, and it’s about time we stopped ignoring it. While menopause is acknowledged as a natural, albeit challenging, phase for women, andropause remains misunderstood, under-discussed, and often dismissed as just “aging.”
So, why are we not talking about it?
Andropause: The Male Menopause
Andropause, often referred to as “male menopause,” is the gradual decline of testosterone in men, typically starting around age 40 and progressing into the 50s and beyond.
Symptoms like fatigue, mood swings, decreased libido, and even cognitive changes aren’t just “getting older”—they’re part of a real, physiological shift. Yet, because society stigmatises male vulnerability, many men don’t even realise they’re going through it, and fewer seek help.
Is it any surprise, then, that men continue to silently struggle while the conversation around menopause becomes more mainstream and supported? The imbalance is glaring.
Why the Silence?
Part of the problem is that male aging has long been seen as something men should just “tough out.” The cultural narrative positions men as invincible, discouraging them from seeking medical advice or even acknowledging symptoms. The term “midlife crisis” often masks what could be hormonal changes, trivialising what men may experience as part of andropause.
On top of that, there’s a lack of research and public awareness. Menopause is well-documented, with entire industries geared toward helping women manage symptoms. But andropause? It’s often glossed over, dismissed as less impactful, or simply ignored.
The Health Risks of Ignoring Andropause
Ignoring andropause isn’t just unfair—it’s dangerous. Low testosterone can contribute to serious health risks, including osteoporosis, heart disease, and depression.
The mental health aspect alone is critical; men already face higher rates of suicide in midlife, and the hormonal changes of andropause can exacerbate feelings of isolation, anxiety, and frustration.
Where’s the conversation about mental health and hormonal balance for men? If we’re not actively addressing these changes, we’re contributing to a culture of silence and stigma that can have life-threatening consequences.
Breaking the Taboo
It’s time to start talking about andropause with the same openness and support we give to menopause.
Men need to feel empowered to ask questions, seek medical advice, and address their changing bodies without fear of being perceived as weak. The conversation must start with both men and healthcare professionals recognising andropause for what it is—a legitimate, hormonally-driven life transition.
Andropause doesn’t need to dominate the headlines the way menopause has recently—but it does need space. We need to balance the dialogue, ensuring men have the same access to support, understanding, and medical solutions that women are increasingly receiving.
Men, It’s Okay to Get Help
Just as women should not suffer silently through menopause, men shouldn’t have to “man up” and power through andropause. The real strength comes from acknowledging these changes, taking action, and seeking help. Hormone replacement therapies, lifestyle changes, and mental health support can all play a role in mitigating the impact of andropause.
The reality is, this isn’t just a “male problem”—it’s a societal one. Men’s health, both physical and emotional, impacts families, workplaces, and communities. Recognising andropause for what it is can improve the lives of men and everyone around them.
Time for a Shift in Conversation
Yes, the focus on menopause is important. But it’s time we extended the conversation to include men and their experiences with andropause. Both transitions deserve attention, and it’s critical that we start dismantling the stigma around male aging and hormonal health.
Andropause is real. It’s time to stop ignoring it!
